Möbius Aromaticity : Which Side Are You on ?

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The idea of Möbius aromaticity was first proposed by Heilbronner in 1964. He postulated that a molecule could gain Möbius aromatic stabilization if the nuclear framework were twisted so the porbitals composing the π-system would contain an odd number of nodes. To introduce a node in the orbitals, Heilbronner theorized that a series of p-orbitals could itself be twisted by contorting the nuclear framework. The twisted p-orbitals would then form a C2-symmetric π-system that lies on the surface of a Möbius strip (Figure 1). A Möbius strip is a onesided, three-dimensional surface that is constructed from a rectangle by holding the first end fixed, rotating the second end 180°, and joining the two ends together (Figure 1). In normal planar annulenes like benzene, the 4n + 2 electrons in the delocalized π-system give the molecule an overall stability associated with a closed-shell Hückel occupancy. In contrast, if 4n electrons are present, the Hückel molecular orbital analysis results in an open-shell configuration, leading to a destabilization of the molecule relative to the same molecule without delocalization of electrons; this destabilization is also known as “anti-aromatic” character. However, if a 180° phase shift is introduced into the array, Hückel analysis predicts a closed-shell electron configuration for the 4n electron case with one phase change and an open-shell configuration for the 4n + 2 case, leading to a reversal in the pattern of stabilization. Heilbronner used Hückel molecular orbital analysis (Figure 2) to calculate the π–electron energy for the twisted p-orbitals in the Möbius case and found that the energy lost from smaller orbital overlap is exactly equal to the energy gained from pairing the two electrons in non-bonding orbitals into an orbital degenerate with the lowest energy molecular orbital (α + 2β). Zimmerman provided a mnemonic for remembering the new Möbius molecular orbital system (Figure 2). Figure 1. A theoretical Möbius strip bearing p-orbitals.

Unambiguous Assessments of Reaction Paths for Selected Pericyclic Reactions
Three major approaches have been developed to predict outcomes for concerted reactions controlled by orbital symmetry analysis using (i) correlation diagrams1, (ii) frontier orbital interactions in transition states2 and (iii) incipient aromatic/ antiaromatic character in transition states3-5. The latter approach (Zimmerman-Dewar or Hückel-Möbius) is particularly simple to teach to undergraduat...
متن کاملThe aromaticity and Möbius characteristics of carbeno[8]heteroannulenes and triplet state annulenes.
Two types of annulene which may show significant Möbius aromatic character and bond and twist delocalisation are proposed; triplet states with 4n + 2 occupancy of the p pi array of atomic orbitals and a novel 8-pi carbeno[8]heteroannulene ring system 1 where the Hückel highly antiaromatic nature as a planar system can be attenuated or even reversed by the C2 symmetric Möbius distortion.

Singly N-confused [26] and [28]hexaphyrins (4, 5) with planar and twisted structures, respectively, were prepared via the acid catalyzed [3 + 3] condensation of N-confused and regular tripyrrane precursors. Hückel aromaticity is observed for [26]hexaphyrin, while the [28]hexaphyrin and its mono-Pd(II) complex exhibit "nonaromaticity" in spite of their Möbius-type structures, judging from the sp...

At room temperature, meso-hexaaryl-substituted [28]hexaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1.1) in solution exist largely as an equilibrium between planar antiaromatic and distorted Möbius aromatic conformers. As the temperature decreases, the molecular structure changes into the distorted Möbius topology that commonly occurs in [28]hexaphyrins, which gives rise to longer excited singlet and triplet state lifetime...
متن کاملEvaluation of the nonlinear optical properties for an expanded porphyrin Hückel-Möbius aromaticity switch.
The conformational flexibility of the expanded porphyrins allows them to achieve different topologies with distinct aromaticities and nonlinear optical properties (NLOP). For instance, it is possible to switch between Möbius and Hückel topologies applying only small changes in the external conditions or in the structure of the ring. In this work, we evaluate the electronic and vibrational contr...
